How to use accents, emojis, and special characters

This article will guide you through some common special characters, and accented letters on both Windows and Mac keyboards.

Not all special characters work across all solutions and platforms.  These characters are not created by ScreenSteps, but by Windows and Mac. You can find more tips at the following links: Mac, or Windows 

®👌❤️ and many more symbols can be used in ScreenSteps:

  1. Using a Windows Keyboard
    • Insert Emojis and Symbols
      1. Place cursor where needed.
      2. Press Windows key + . (period) or Windows key + ; (semicolon).
      3. Select emoji or symbol from the panel.
    • Type Special Characters and Accents
      1. Enable On-Screen Keyboard for guidance (optional): Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
      2. Use Alt Codes: Hold Alt and type the numeric code on the numeric keypad.
      3. Access Character Map: Open Start menu, search for Character Map, select character, click Copy, and paste.
  2. Using a Mac Keyboard
    • Insert Emojis and Symbols
      1. Place cursor where needed.
      2. Press Control + Command + Space.
      3. Browse and double-click emoji or symbol.
    • Type Accented Letters
      1. Hold letter key until menu appears.
      2. Select accented letter by pressing number or clicking.
    • Insert Special Characters
      1. Access Character Viewer: Go to Edit > Emoji & Symbols or use Control + Command + Space.
      2. Search and double-click symbol or character.
