In the ScreenSteps article editors you add content to an article by inserting a content block. ScreenSteps provides different types of content blocks, each with a customized editor. This article will show you how to insert new content blocks into an article.
All ScreenSteps articles provide the following content blocks:
- Heading
- Text
- Image
- Table
- Embed HTML
- Code Block
- File Attachment
Checklist and Workflow article types (available on certain plans) support the following additional types:
- Checklist item
Workflow article types support the following additional types:
- Questions
- Answers
- Steps
If you have our Video feature enabled on your account then a Video content block is supported as well.
Are you using the web or desktop editor?
Using the + button
If you move your cursor above or below an existing content block you will see a blue + icon appear. Clicking on this button will display a menu of content blocks that you can click on to insert. If you have not added any content to your article then you will see the + icon below the article title.
You can continue to add new content blocks as needed by clicking on the + icon at the top of bottom of existing content blocks. In this screenshot a text content block will be added below the existing heading.
Using the Insert Content Block dialog
Press Cmd + Shift + = on macOS or Ctrl + Shift + = on other platforms to open the Insert Content Block dialog.
A dialog will appear with the available content blocks that can be inserted into the article. To select a content block type click on the content block type in the dialog or use the shortcut key. To the right of each content block is the shortcut key that you can press to insert that content block.
Using the Add content + button
A dialog will appear with the available content blocks that can be inserted into the article. To select a content block type, click on the content block type in the dialog.
In the desktop editor there are a couple of different ways to add content:
- Drag and drop content blocks from the content block tray onto the article outline
- Click on an icon in the content block tray to insert the content block into the article outline relative to the currently selected content block
- Use the + button that appears below content blocks in the content block editor
- Use the Document > Add Content Block... menu option or the associated keyboard shortcut
- Right-click on a content block and use the Add Content Block option in the contextual menu
- Use the Add Content Block option in the article outline content block action menu

The following animation shows how to drag and drop, or click on, content blocks in the content block tray to add them to the article outline. The list of available content blocks in the tray will change based on the article type.

Using the Document > Add Content Block... menu

Content block contextual menus and article outline action menu
When adding content using one of these menus you will sometimes see the option of inserting content as a sibling or a child (see the screenshot below). This appears for content blocks that can be a sibling or a child of the content block you clicked on.
You can right-click on a content block in the editor or the outline to display a contextual menu with an Add Content Block option.
From the article outline you can click on the action menu or right-click to show the contextual menu to add content. Use the Add Content Block menu to insert a content block.
