ScreenSteps

Why is the screen black or gray when I try to capture the screen on Windows?

Updated on

The screen appears black

This issue is most likely caused by your anti-virus application. Anti-virus software, such as Webroot, will block applications from taking screenshots. The solution is to configure your security software to allow ScreenSteps access to the screen.

Webroot

As of this writing, you can find instructions on changing the settings for an application in Webroot at the following URL:

You should change ScreenSteps.exe from Deny to Protect or Allow.

The screen appears gray

We have had one report of the screen appearing gray when starting a screen capture session. An example is shown below. In this particular case the solution was to run the ScreenSteps.exe in Windows 8 compatibility mode.
